The Impact of Access Driveways on Accident Rates In Iranian Main Roads

Abstract

Studying different accidents statistics in Iran country, we can conclude that existence of improper accesses and construction of unsystematic access driveways have caused many accidents to occur in country roads. Statistics reveal that about 37 percent of interurban accidents have occurred at intersections, which is the highest percentage in the study of the conditions of roads and highways. Installations, estates, residential complexes, industrial and agricultural business places, whether existed before or made after the construction of roads or highways, have to use them, so they need entrance to or exit from them.
Also, in cities or city vicinities, rapid economic growth has caused an increased demand in access driveways along roads and highways which, in turn, reduces highway capacity and safety. So, accessibility and mobility, or road capacity and safety, need coordination.
Considering what was said above, by studying and evaluating factors involved in interurban accidents, especially in marginal accesses, recognizing disorders related to these factors and presenting practical solutions, it is possible to diminish number of accidents, their intensities, and related fatalities and damage.
